Identity Thieves are using Email

How Spam can Lead to Identity Theft

Besides being an annoyance, unsolicited e-mail advertising (commonly known as "spam") can be dangerous.

Spam is sometimes designed to lure consumers to official looking Web sites that, in actuality, are designed to gather passwords, Social Security numbers, credit card information, and other personal data useful in theft of identity. The bogus website might be designed to look like the billing page of an Internet service provider, the application form for a loan, or even a page on which the consumer can "unsubscribe" from future email solicitations.

Experts say, rather than responding or unsubscribing, the best practice is simply to delete the Spam, and to employ filters that discard the spam before you even have to see it.
