What are your credit report rights when applying for a job? Employers are using credit reports for employment screening purposes more often these days. Here are the main rules:

  • Your written OK is required. (You'll usually be asked to sign something along with your job application.)
  • If the credit report results in adverse action, for example, you are not hired because of something in the report, you must be given a copy - but it's not the employer who'll give it to you. You need to request your free credit report from the credit reporting agency the employer used. The employer's responsibility to tell you the name, address, and phone of the credit bureau, usually by giving you an "adverse action notice." The adverse action notice is a pre-printed form that informs you of your credit report rights.

It's best to check your credit report yourself, long before you apply for a job. You'd hate to let a good job go to someone else just because there was an error on your credit report!
