The safest method is to send a certified letter to the customer service department of the card issuer. Ask the post office to send it "return-receipt requested." In the letter, ask for the account to be closed, and ask the company to report it to the credit bureaus as "closed by consumer." Check your credit report after 30 to 60 days to verify that the account closure has been done correctly.
