Fraud alert for your credit report: What kind do you need? With implementation of FACTA, the credit bureaus have three types of fraud alerts that can be included on your credit report.

If you think you are a victim of identity theft, or may likely become one, you can can request an initial alert, which marks your file for 90 days, six months, or a year (depending on the credit bureau) and allows you a free report. Your phone number can be included on the alert for identity verification purposes. Your information is also witheld from telemarketers and direct mail "pre-approved credit" offers for several months up to two years (depending on the bureau.)

If you've confirmed you are a victim of identity theft, you can get the seven-year extended alert. You get two free credit reports within 12 months, and you are removed from pre-approved credit offers for a longer period for up to 7 years (depending on the bureau.)

The third type of security alert is the one-year active duty alert, which can be requested by military personnel as an identity theft prevention measure, with no requirement for evidence of fraud.
