Your credit report and the seven-year rule Most negative items, except bankruptcies, stay on your credit report 7 years. (Bankruptcies stay for 10 years.)
What if a creditor sells a bad debt to a collection agency. Do the seven years star over?
At one time, that may have been the case, but now the time limit for derogatory credit report items is strictly seven years and six months from the date of the original delinquency.
