How can I freeze my credit report? In a few states (California and Texas) you can now freeze your credit report. When your credit report is frozen, if someone applies for credit using your name, they'll be rejected because there is no way for a lender to see your credit history.

If you are already an identity theft victim, the freeze is free, otherwise it is $10 per bureau. Unfreezing your credit report temporarily when you want to apply for credit is $8 per bureau. Since there are three main bureaus, Equifax, Experian, and Trans Union, you price is likely to be $30 for freezing, and $24 for unfreezing them all.

The credit report freeze option will be coming to Louisiana and Vermont next July.
